CHARITIES & DESIGN

The Design Council, 34 Bow Street, London, WC2E 7DL

Tuesday 4th July 2006    1.30 - 5.30pm

Held on 4th July 2006 at the Design Council, London, and hosted by Media Trust, this ambitious event brought charities together with designers, exploring the potential mutual benefits on offer working together. Amanda Sleet (Kingston University), organised this event with the intention of showing both parties the benefits of working with each other, by showcasing successful collaborations. We wanted to show designers and the charities that good designers can hold valuable skills and talents which can benefit and improve charities’ profiles and fundraising methods.

Designplus was particularly keen to attract the smaller design businesses and charities who may not have worked together before. The event served to raise the current issues facing charities; the role of design in improving fundraising effectiveness and building brand awareness and was chaired by Dominic O’Reilly It also introduced the latest government drives and funding opportunities.

Speaking at the event were representatives from several major design consultancies, including Johnson Banks and Livity with speakers and delegates from large charities including the Teenage Cancer Trust, Christian Aid, the Rainforest Foundation and Save the Children and the Vassell Centre. In addition, we introduced those present to The Charity File, a unique collection of British fundraising ephemera dating from the 17th century to the present, comprising artifacts, manuscripts and printed documents from the extensive collection belonging to Brian Love.

An informal atmosphere, lively discussion, debate and a fabulous networking buffet helped make this event one of Designplus’s most successful to date.
