THE ‘BUSINESS’ OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

THE ‘BUSINESS’ OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Tuesday 5th July 2005

University of Westminster

This was the second in a series of six lectures and debates on contemporary themes in sustainable design and sustainable business, given by leading design researchers, practitioners and businesspeople. The series challenges the design profession by showing how principles of sustainability can be applied to design practice.

Dr Chris Sherwin is the Principal Sustainability Advisor in the Business Program at the Forum for the Future. Here he manages partnerships with BP, Cadbury Schweppes, Philips Electronics, the Design Council and the Tetley Group - as well as leading Forum projects and activities on sustainable marketing and sustainable innovation. In all this he tries to make business more sustainable by being more innovative.

The event was chaired by Paul Micklethwaite of the WestFocus Sustainability Network. Approximately seventy people attended from academia and the design industry. This included approximately twenty from the London Remade Enviro-Entrepreneur School 2005. This school is held at the beginning of July in conjunction with the University of Westminster. It encourages and nurtures aspiring graduates who have a passion for recycling and a belief in the importance of environmental technologies. The School supports entry into the marketplace via an intense three-day programme delivered by seasoned entrepreneurs and environmentalists.
