Discovery:  Brunel Design Students will Light Up The ARC Show

Brunel University highly rated Product and Industrial Design course students will showcase their work at The ARC Show, on the 29th February – 1st March 2012, at the Business Design Centre.

The students are finalists in an LED Architectural Lighting Challenge sponsored by Remote Controlled Lighting Ltd (RCL). The brief challenged over 100 second year students to create an LED architectural light fitting, innovative in the lighting effect, operation, mounting or in the way it fits into its surroundings. Only commercially viable designs have been shortlisted, those with an efficient, functional light output and a realistic manufacturing process.

The winner will be announced at the Show by a team of leading lighting innovators. Joe Rushton from RCL said ‘it is wonderful to see the creative energy that is produced from Brunel, the reason we sponsor this competition is to help shape the next generation of talent to design beautiful products that are sensitive to the constraints and challenges of business’’.

Brunel University places a high priority on building relationships with companies such as RCL. Commercial projects enable students to prepare for roles in today’s demanding business environment, whilst giving companies valuable access to the creative ideas of over 100 students.

From a student perspective, presenting at ARC provides a real forum to exhibit concepts and receive expert reviews from industry. Last year’s winning student, Kat Harris is now working for Maya Lighting in China for her industrial placement year. Her experience of participating in this competition and exhibiting at ARC helped fuel her interest in lighting design and innovation. Reflecting on her experience from last year she stated that ‘exhibiting at The ARC Show in London was a fantastic experience, it was a valuable insight into the work that goes into an exhibition and the opportunities that can arise from it. As well as gaining advice from renowned lighting experts, the ARC Show also offered a unique chance to talk to businessmen and women in many industries about our work. I thoroughly enjoyed the Lighting Exhibition and the chance to present my own work for the first time’.
